I did not know about the control TAB and Shift TAB gestures.
With screen readers like NVDA some key combinations are intercepted by the NVDA program and do not go to the application focused unless one chooses to let them.

The default timeout is 10 seconds - maybe to short.
You can change the time:
- under Help->About check the current location of the freecommander.ini
- close all instances of FreeCommander
- open the freecommander.ini file with some text editor
