Path portability (for tabs and history)

#1 Post by CodesAway » 08.01.2010, 06:53

I use FreeCommander on a daily basis, both on a "flash drive" partition of my hard drive and on my actual flash drive. I love that FreeCommander has the "%FcSrcDrive%" attribute which I use to make all my "editor" programs and "favorite tools" portable. The first gives me portable file associations, while the latter allows me to open the selected file(s) in the many different programs that reside on my flash drive.

The only thing I haven't figured out how to make portable is the tab directories (and their associated history).

If this is not already implemented, my suggested solution would be to add
an option that would "use relative paths when saving". If this setting were checked, when saving, the paths would be stored as relative paths (instead of absolute).

This option would give path portability, so if a flash drive is assigned a different letter (which can happen if you use different computers), the paths that reference folders on the flash drive continue to work (even though the drive letter has changed).

Current solutions require use of a bat file which would run before FreeCommander runs and changes the drive letter to the drive letter for the flash drive. Then, when closing FreeCommander, another bat file must be run to change the drive letter back to an unused drive letter (e.g. "0:").
