Initialize file rename by a single-click on the target file

In just about every other file manager I've used, it is possible to initialize a file rename by simply clicking once on the target file, rather than using a keyboard shortcut or right click and selecting "Rename".

This can be done with a semi double click. You need to click the same file within about 1 to 2 seconds after the last one.

It would be VERY unusual if a left double-click is used. That is how virtually all file managers attempt to launch a file. I honestly don't think the developer would allow two behaviors for that event.

Are you sure we're talking about the same thing? In most other file managers you only have to perform a slow single-click to trigger the rename function. After several attempts, a left double-click...at any speed, does nothing, or attempts to launch the target file.

Is your method documented?

Thanks.

Try "long" left click.

After a full uninstall/reinstall of FC 2009.02a, the problem remains.

After some research through the old bug reports, I've discovered that this is not a new issue. Apparently at one time the function was broken, then fixed, then broken again after some number of updates.

Thanks anyway.

I may be off base here, as I often am, but I think maybe this is affected by how you have your "Select Files" configured. Do you have Hot-Tracking enabled?
Hot-tracking definitely seems to affect my ability to click a file to rename it.

As long as I haven't configured to Open With Single Click, once the file is selected/highlighted by any means (whether by clicking on it or scrolling to it with arrow keys) a gentle single left-click takes it into rename-mode.

BUT if I have Hot-Tracking turned on, that slow click does nothing, I can only double-click to open, or right-click to rename.

Likewise, in NC mode, if Hot-tracking is on, I can't get into rename mode with a single click, but if Hot-tracking is off, I can.

I'm wondering if other users can confirm this behavior.

Yes, granny. You are absolutely correct!

Thanks, I'm glad for confirmation, but sad that it wasn't user error on my part.

( H for Hari, as in Isaac Asimov? just rambling, sorry....)

And... We Have A Winner!

Turning OFF hot tracking in "Select items" is the solution!

Thank you, thank you!

Wow, is hot tracking the default at set up? I sure can't remember setting it myself, and the help system knows nothing about it. This seems like a setting that really needs some attention in a future version of "Help".

Granny, you made my day!

I'm glad that helped!

I don't use Hot Track anyway, since I use a lot of color coding for file-types, and hot-track color doesn't highlight those, but I had a memory of this naughty behavior, and trials just now confirmed that memory.

My favorite sci-fi author of all time. It was a sad day when he passed on.

It was that.

And although I do enjoy Will Smith, I thought the entire cast and crew of I, Robot should be flogged. There was nothing left of Isaac except the title and some character names!
