Flat View color applied and not removeable

FC 2009.02a, Windows XP Sp3
Go to a directory with a huge number of sub-dirs/folders
Choose flat view--files
note the background color changes
Get tired of waiting, hit ESC
Note you're still in previous view (not flat view), but background color remains.
Changing view to another will not fix the bkgd.
WorkAround:
Go to a small directory.
Enter flat view
leave flat view--clear bkgd restored.
Apparently, the enter flat view process needs to complete for the color to get restored correctly.
