don't delete a favorite folder if it doesn't exist

A few days ago I added a favorites folder. Then a few days later, the folder was gone (it needed to be recreated as part of our build process). When I opened the folder via Folder->Favorites, it didn't open and the entry was removed from the list. I didn't see an error message or anything. A coworker just had the same experience.
I'd prefer that
a) let this be an option: delete favorite from list if it no longer exists (off by default)
or
b) show an error message if the folder isn't available but don't delete it
