When searching files from name (partial, in this case) FC XE 0.0.0.609 gets no results, when there are actually several files that match. FC 2009.02B, however, works right.

Please check the menu item Options->Add wildcards to file name - should be active.

On the XE screenshot is the option "Search in archives" active.

I actually thought ticking that option meant that search should include archives also.

By the way, I noticed FC EX's files/folders search doesn't auto-complete file name based on history, or should it?

First of all, I checked, and "Options->Add wildcards to file name" was already active (Apparently by default).
After confirming that un-selecting "Search in archives" made my search work, I ticked that option again, hit "Find" button and got an unexpected result, as seen in the attached image. What happened?

That is indeed an unexpected result. Strange.
Can you repeat the error? Or was it a one-time oddity?
Is this an ongoing problem in other searches?

Ok. I just repeated the search and returned no results (as expected).
Just to be sure, I searched again, repeating file name and changing the target folder at the same folder-structure level. Returned no results, which is correct.
Of course, on both cases "Search in archives" was selected. "Normal" search returns correct results always.
By the way, as I explained before, "Search in archives" showing at the same level than "Search in subfolder up to level..." might be interpreted as an "inclusive" option rather than "exclusive" (in fact I did). Shouldn't it be presented in another, less confusing, way? Just a suggestion...
It just occurred to me that adding the word "only" to "Search in archives" might do the trick, although moving the option away from "Search in subfolder level..." wouldn't be a bad idea, in my opinion...

Yes, checking that box means "include archives also."
What Marek was explaining is that your search was slower because it searched in archive files in addition to a regular files. Clearing that box will result in a faster search.

It doesn't auto-complete, but you can dropdown the history list and select a previous search string.

When there are multiple checkboxes at the same level (not indented), each one operates independently. So in this case, you can search in subfolders and/or search in archives -- they are neither inclusive nor exclusive of each other.
