I recently built a new PC with Windows Vista at home. The Vista version of explorer has a small but nifty enhancement -- when you rename a file the filename is selected by default, but the extension (e.g. ".xls") is not.

It works exactly the same in FreeCommander - Windows XP. Try to change the option in Settings > Confirmations > "Use dialog window for rename".
