The "X"-button for a tab should get visible when hovering the mouse over it, so the tab can be closed without opening it. This is useful for tabs which would take a long time to load when opened, e.g. disconnected network drives.

If implemented, only as option, disabled by default, because I don't like this in web browsers, when I want to change tab, I close the tab by mistake sometimes.

What about a middle button click?

Yes, optionally is always good.
Middle button is assigned to do a double click already.

Middle click to close tab is a workaround, I don't use double click to close tab, because I could close the tab by mistake, but middle click is safe and quick way to close active or inactive tab.
