b948: TortoiseGit missing from context menu

#1 Post by kino » 09.05.2026, 16:45

Hello,

Weirdest thing occurs : FreeCommander's context menu (right-click) shows everything comparable to Windows Explorer right-click menu BUT the TortoiseGit sub-menus :
WinExplorer_ctx_menu_with_TortoiseGit.png
FreeCommander_ctx_menu_no_TortoiseGit.png
using:
FreeCommander XE 2026 Build 948 64-bit non public
Windows 11 Pro for Workstations, Build 22631 (OS Version 10.0.22631).
TortoiseGit 2.18 and 2.18.1

...any idea what could be the problem ?
Thanks

What about older FC version 947, 946?
Is TortoiseGit 2.18 and 2.18.1 64 bit?

I can spot the problem as far back to build 940 (the oldest I kept installer for)
Yes, using TortoiseGit 64 bits.

If it may help (?), I also can't see overlays on file icons whereas the native file explorer does show them.

Thanks

For overlays visibility you should use "extracted" icons.

The TortoiseSVN has an option: Show overlays and context menu only in explorer.
Check if the option exists in TortoiseGit.

Hello Karoll,

Thanks for your hints.

That's already my configuration.

It does exist and it's already my configuration.
(or should I uncheck so that it applies elsewhere ?)

My problem is not Tortoise per se but the discrepancy between FreeCommander context menu (that I thought being the same as) and Win11 Explorer context menu.

Code: Select all

Show overlays and context menu only in explorer.
You should deactivate this option.

Hello Karol,

It works !
Had to restart Windows entirely and tweak a few things in the registry (damn OneDrive and GoogleDrive competing for those 9-first-only ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers by adding spaces in the front of key names)
I now have both the context menu (without, you're just toast with Tortoise) and the overlays.

Many thanks for that not-fully-FC matter !

K.
