I want a daemon in the system tray.

#1 Post by soarocy » 09.09.2008, 05:19

Just tried FC, it is great! However there is one feature that I'm missing. Basically I want a daemon in the system tray so that I can launch a new instance of FC as quickly as possible. I also want a global hotkey to launch the new instance.

The "Minimize to system tray" option doesn't fit to my taste because 1) there is no hotkey to restore the window, 2) every time it restores to the last layout, however I want to open a default layout, 3) I actually want to minimize to taskbar while having a tray icon (the daemon).

There could be other useful commands to add to the daemon, for instance, opening different pre-defined layouts, for another instance, double-click on the blank space of desktop opening new default layout, for a third instance, it could even recognize mouse gestures.

Hope I'm not asking for too much

Thanks.

What you want is another "exe" file. Perhaps you could try HotkeyP, you can use it also to start several instances of FC, you can define the keyboard shortcuts to start/minimize FC.

It's a great, small and free tool, with many other useful options.

Yep, that kind of works, but won't be as quick as a dedicated daemon. When I want it, I want it to show up instantly from the memory, not to load slowly from the disk.

Thanks.

What exactly do you mean by this "daemon" you speak about?

Yes, of course, first time it's not running, so it's "slow", but you can add FC to StartUp folder, or enable option "run automatically after windows starts" in HotkeyP, then use just one hotkey to show/minimize FC quickly.
