In my configuration of FreeCommander I would like to to have both panels show the same columns in detail view. For an individual file I would like to see the file's name, the file's size, date of last modification, and creation date. Out of all of these, there are 2 items that I would like to have always displayed are the file's name and the file's size.
The way that my program is presently configured the settings are configured the way that I want while the other panel does not display the file's size. The option to use the detailed view has been selected for both panels.
I have installed the FreeCommander twice this evening in attempts to get the program's configuration the way that I would like it. I would like each panel to show columns in the "detailed" format. I also would like to have the placement of each the columns in both panels be the same in size and in heading. I thought that setting the program up program to suit my taste would be easy. Whenever I have trouble, I push the "F1" or start searching for answers in the program's help file.
I have tried to get FreeCommander's help file to work by putting it in the same folder as the program's installation files, I put a copy in the program's directory and I have even shoved one up its .... That is aggravation number one. No matter how I have tried to get that help file installed I have been foiled at every turn. What really makes so aggravating to me is that one or two out of the dozens of times that I have installed, uninstalled, and reinstalled "FreeCommander" the help file was actually installed correctly.
Major aggravation number two: since I was not able to find a heading in the help file that alluded to how to set up a column to display a file's size (it was not any problem to set up a folder size). I decided to search for the phrase "show file size". The answer that was returned was of no help. In the answer that I received each of the 3 words that I had searched on were listed individually and a notice was displayed that said because each of the words were common and that the words that I used in my search phrase were "small words" - I think that means that the words contain very few letters, I was told that I could not use any of the 3 words in my search phrase. Now what can I do? I want to look for specific words but when I tried to search for I get an error message saying that each of the words are illegal and that no search can be conducted using one or combination of any of the 3 that I had just used. I think that means I cannot search for any of the terms that I want to search for.
I am sure that there is a easy solution to my problem but I have become too frustrated to look for the solution any further. Being "shot down" by the search engine was the final straw.
Will someone please help me? I would like to be able to show the size of the files that are listed in "FreeCommander".

Re: Show File Size
You want to create "Custom Columns". You will love it once you get it all set up.
Check this link for the guide on FreeCommander home page
http://www.freecommander.com/fc_guide_en02.htm
Also, I wrote and uploaded a guide last summer, It has a page on creating "Custom Columns", I don't know if the link is still good or not....
pdf file 683 kb
http://www.mediafire.com/?obvdzjmdzmh
If you want my guide, please post back if the link is dead, and I will upload it again.
Problem accessing Help file is notorious, see the FAQ
http://www.freecommander.com/fc_faq_en.htm
I'm running FC portable version, so I can't put the help file in the main folder with the launcher "FreeCommanderPortable.exe", it has to go in sub-folder App>>FreeCommander alongside the actual FreeCommander.exe executable.
Help file is really out-dated anyway, and doesn't address dozens of newer features.
Edited to add link to Bearded Kirklander's GUIDE.

Re: Show File Size
Link is dead.
In am surprised that there is an option to view "Folders" with their size but not an easy to find way out how to display a file's size. I would think that most people would not want a folder's size because of the length of time that it takes to calculate it.

Re: Show File Size
I will upload again and post back new links, probably tomorrow.
Meanwhile, you can also get the file size in the "tool tip" popup when you hover the cursor over file name
menu Settings >> View >> checkbox for "Show Files Tooltip"

Re: Show File Size
Thank you for responding to my post. I appreciate you uploading your guide. I will try to download the guide in just a few moments.
I checked the directory where I have installed FreeCommander and noticed that it had two of the FreeCommander.chm files in the directory. Double-clicking on the file produces no results - the file does not open. Each of the two help files have identical sizes. The file size as indicated by Windows Explorer is 399 kB. I thought it might be possible for files to be corrupt because they might have been propagated from the same download. However, a fresh download of the help file is also 399 kB.
I have never enabled "" because I thought that function might slow a program's response time. I did not just pick on FreeCommander it is something that I have done across the board. I will turn on the ToolTips for FreeCommander.

Re: Show File Size
For displaying special columns in details view you can create "Custom Columns" under the "view" menu.
You can use the forum search for "custom" & "columns" to get infos about "how to create Custom Columns".
